Premiere Newsletter Fall
2002
|
|
I
would like to take this opportunity to introduce our first issue
of the "Bayside Health Newsletter". You will find useful tips
and information on having an injury-free and a healthy lifestyle.
For all of you that took the time to sign in with your e-mail
address, you will be receiving our newsletter once per month.
If you wish to not receive the newsletter, just send us an e-mail
to the address at the bottom of this newsletter. |
|
| Every month will feature health research
and news that will be applicable to all of you. You will find health
news pertaining to chiropractic and also other topics concerning general
health and wellness care from other primary health care disciplines.
My philosophy on health care is a multidisciplinary approach. I believe
that we can all benefit from other health care providers be it your
family doctor or the naturopathic physician. |
|
I shall also be introducing a panel of professional
advisors that Bayside works with. A short biography of each advisor
will be included in each issue. They will provide you with helpful
tips and information to help you on the road to better health. Just
check the "Professional Advisor" section each month. Lastly, I welcome
anyone of you to write me with comments or questions. Your input
is important in making Bayside a place you can depend on for quality
health care in this Province.
 |
Our clinic will be closed on December 21 and will
re-open on January 3. Please call Alice at reception to book
your appointments before those dates. I wish all of you a Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year! |
To your health!
Dr. Andrew Chin.

Research News:
Spinal Fixations Adversely
Affect The Immune System
|
|
|
There is an increasing body of evidence that
the nervous system is capable of modulating the immune response.
Receptors for neuromodulators and neurohormones have been found
on human T lymphocytes. Activation of these receptors can be stimulatory
or inhibitory depending on the neuroactive substance. The immune
system may be able to communicate with the nervous system using
neuromodulators and neurohormones secreted by lymphocytes. Sympathetic
innervation of lymphoid tissues is not restricted to blood vessels
and smooth muscle, but directly supplies lymphocytes and blood precursor
cells. It is theorized that spinal fixations may adversely affect
the immune response through somatosympathetic reflexes. Spinal manipulation
can correct the spinal fixations and may eliminate the adverse affects
of somatosympathetic reflexes.

Is Osteoarthritis a disease caused
by 'wear and tear'?
|
|
| Osteoarthritis
(OA), also referred to as degenerative joint disease, degenerative
arthritis, osteoarthrosis or hypertrophic arthritis, is among the
most frequent and symptomatic medical problems for middle-aged and
older people. The symptoms and signs of OA include joint pain and
restriction of motion and in some instances, crepitus with motion,
joint effusions and deformity. |
| Much
of the public and more than a few physicians believe that OA results
from "normal wear and tear" and it "eventually stiffens the joints
of virtually everybody who lives past 65" [Gorman C. Relief for swollen
joints. Time. Oct. 28, 1996:86]. However, unlike a metal bearing surface,
articular cartilage has some capacity to maintain and even repair
itself. The repair response that involves increased synthesis of matrix
macromolecules and to a lesser extent cell migration and proliferation
counters the catabolic effects of the degradative enzymes and loss
of chondrocytes. This process may stabilize or, in some instances,
restore a form of articular surface even among patients with advanced
OA. |
| In
addition, longitudinal studies of patients with hip and knee OA show
that over a decade or more, the radiographic signs of joint degeneration
do not progress in one- to two-thirds of patients, and a longitudinal
study of 63 patients showed that over 11 years, 10% of patients demonstrated
improvement in the radiographic signs of joint degeneration. Therefore,
it appears that OA is not the inevitable result of normal wear and
tear based on the evidence that: |
- Normal
lifelong joint use does not cause joint degeneration;
- An imbalance between articular cartilage
anabolic and catabolic activity plays a critical role in causing
articular cartilage loss;
- Altering joint loading can lead to restoration
of a form of articular surface;
- Some patients spontaneously develop a
new articular surface.

Bayside Questions and Answers:
|
1. What MSP coverage is available
when I go to the chiropractor or massage therapist?
|
2. Are there seniors and student
rates?
|
Effective January 1, 2002, only
those MSP beneficiaries with premium assistance status are
eligible for a combined annual limit (each calendar year)
of 10 visits for physiotherapy, massage therapy, chiropractic,
naturopathy and non-surgical podiatry. Patients that qualify
for MSP coverage at Bayside will only have to pay a treatment
fee of $15 per visit.
|
Yes, there are. Seniors and students will only
have to pay a treatment fee of $20 per visit. Students will
have to provide some form of identification showing their
student status. A senior is anyone over 65 years of age.
|
3. How can I save money coming
to Bayside?
|
4. What is the difference between
"preventative" and "wellness" care?
|
For those of you who are interested in a discounted
care program, Bayside offers you discounted rates called our
"Wellness Plan". This plan is suitable for those of you that
are coming to Bayside more than once a month. The first visit
is the regular $30, the second is $25 and the third is $20.
All discounted visit rates are only applicable for the month.
Unused discounted rates cannot be "rolled-over" to the next
month. Please ask Alice at the front counter for more information.
|
"Preventative care" is for the patient who wishes
to maintain the care they have already received and avoid
becoming symptomatic again. Usually the treatment frequency
is once per month to achieve this. "Wellness care" is for
the patient who is concerned with their overall mind/body
functioning and who wants their body to operate at its best
health potential. They are not just concerned with avoiding
symptoms. Usually the treatment frequency is twice per month.
|
5. I need Orthortics for my shoes.
Can you help me?
|
Yes, we can. At Bayside, we believe in casting
orthortics the from a non-weight bearing position. We feel
that this method offers a more accurate cast than a weight-bearing
cast. When you stand in a mold, the weight of your body causes
your foot to change its normal shape, the fat pads under your
foot is spread out and if your have fallen arches, it also
causes the weight-bearing foot to lose its natural arch. The
result is a cast of a foot that is larger and a loss of the
intended arch support. All our othortics incorporates today's
most advanced glass/graphite/epoxy resin components. This
line includes three of the lightest, thinnest (1.5 to 1.6
mm without topcover), most durable composite orthotics available,
with the widest flex range of any orthotic family today. So
thin that new shoes are not required. Available with over
40 standard options.
|
|
|
|
|
The Liberal Government's decision
to cut MSP coverage for chiropractic care, physiotherapy, massage
therapy and other health care services is having a huge impact on
British Columbians. Only qualified patients under premium assistance
will still be able to have limited coverage under MSP.
|
In light of the decrease in health
care subsidization to chiropractic services in this province, we
have to more accurately reflect the costs of providing our services
to you. Some of our patients are already paying those treatment
fees.
|
For those of you that have not
been brought up to current rates, our treatment fees will increase
effective January 1, 2003 to the following:
| Regular Treatment Fee:
|
$30.00 |
| Premium Assistance Fee: |
$15.00 |
|
Our fees are still below the recommended
BC Chiropractic Association treatment fees that are currently
being charged at other chiropractic practices. For those of you
with third-party insurance and extended health care coverage,
either through employment or as a dependent, we will still provide
you with official receipts of reimbursement. Just be sure to ask
for it when you check in at the front counter.
|
If you have any questions, please feel
free to ask either the doctors or the staff.
